This is just a quick post to congratulate Fencibles United on winning the Pascoe Shield last week, and with it promotion to NRFL Division 1.
Obviously I was at Central United for the Chatham Cup semi-final last Saturday but I do consider it important to mark league wins whenever possible so at full time at Kiwitea Street I high tailed it over to Taharoto Park to capture a few snaps of Fencies’ special moment.
It started raining shortly after my arrival (GAH!) so I didn’t get many photos of the last fifteen minutes or so of the game, but it mercifully cleared in time for the grand old trophy to be handed over out on the pitch.
It was a privilege to be there for this. Fencibles are a great club, and they have been striving for this success for quite a long time.
Ever since their relegation to Division 2 in 2010 they have been there or thereabouts in the promotion hunt more often than not, but until now they have been narrowly missing out – falling short by one table position in 2011, 2013 and 2015; and by two places last year.
Their coaching staff and club administrators have notoriously copped a large amount of flak, I believe unfairly, from anonymous fans on social media during that time.
Putting all of the above together, despite my undying love for Waiheke United, I couldn’t be happier with this outcome.
So congratulations Fencibles! I look forward to following what I am sure will be your continued upwards trajectory.
See you next year.
