Public Service Announcement – Comment settings relaxed

Agro Jean getting separated from Andre Silva

ITBOTN has historically had a bit of a problem with spam comments. At one stage we were getting hundreds per day and it got far too time consuming for me to manage.

So a year or two ago I took some steps to bring the problem under control. Comments were turned off on posts older than a few weeks old and anyone commenting had to enter a valid e-mail address.

After a while, this worked a treat and spam comments tailed right off to the point where we now get almost none. But the downside is I’ve had a lot of feedback that the whole entering an e-mail address thing puts a lot of people off commenting. And I want people to post comments.

So I have now relaxed the settings back to how they were before.

However… One of the benefits of making people give a valid e-mail address was that it meant there was no such thing as an anonymous comment and it contributed greatly to keeping things civilised.

Without wanting to sound too much like a schoolmarm, while I really want this to be a place where people come to talk about football, I am also determined that any debates we have will be conducted in a respectful way. This is not Stuff, Whale Oil or the Northern League Forum!

Just to reiterate the house rules:

No personal attacks.
No mindless abuse.
Nothing that even comes close to being libellous.
Nothing racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise bigoted.

I reserve the right to unilaterally edit or delete any comments that I feel have crossed the line.

This is a bit of a trial for now and I may bring the restrictions back if the spam returns, but until then knock yourselves out!

  1. i used to dip my toe in Whale Oil about 4 years ago, some of the stuff on there was pretty awful, and I haven’t been back since, same as Kiwiblog

  2. Great work Enzo. ITBOTN is a great local football blog with good rules. Real football folk and no crazy trolls. I don’t have a problem with the email / name thing myself. I believe comments should be named or not anonymous as it keeps out abusive or libel comments and if it prevents time consuming spam then it’s all good by me.
