Round one of the Chatham Cup is coming up fast – it’s two weeks away to be precise – and after the draw was made last week, a few fans on Twitter had an idea… What if we picked a nice fun fixture, somewhere between Auckland and Wellington, to have a fan convergence at?
Fans from Auckland could carpool down. Fans from Wellington could carpool up. And the two clubs playing could get a nice boost of a decent crowd enjoying their fixture with chants and cheers to spur them on. The local club may even get a financial boost of a few extra people spending some money over their bar.
For the fans, it will be a fun day out and a good chance to talk to people in real life that we otherwise only interact with in the cyber world.
But most importantly, for the Cup, it will make a real event of one of the classic early round fixtures.
So the decision was made. Taupo AFC vs Manukau City, Crown Park, Taupo, 2pm, Saturday 14 May.
Let’s see how it goes and if it’s a success it could become a great annual event on the calendar of New Zealand football fans.
We already have confirmed attendances from Wellington, Auckland and Hamilton football lovers.
And the more the merrier!
If you would like transport, there’s still room in my car. We are also organising some accommodation for those that are keen to stay Saturday night.

Let’s make this a day to remember for all concerned and celebrate the cup the way it should be celebrated!
It would be awesome to see you there.
