The monthly kick around – September 2013

Two months ago I kicked off a new feature on – a regular general debate thread – something that I hope will help this blog to become a place where people feel comfortable coming, not just to read, but also to engage and debate football issues. The basic thought is that a generic post will go up once a month (for the time being) that encourages comments on any football topic that you would like to discuss.

Why would you comment here when there are perfectly good forums? I hope because this will be a bit more pleasant. Lots of people have told me that they won’t engage in debate on the forums because they are not moderated and quite often descend into ugly slagging matches. While I don’t want to be a total square, and have no intention of banning anyone (that only puts people off even more), I will simply ask commenters to respect each other and I will delete any personal attacks.

The first month we got two comments, last month we more than doubled it to five, so this month I reckon we can safely aim for ten(!) So there’s your performance target. Now, GO!

  1. What’s the deal with the so-called Financial Fair Play rules? Are they actually in place? What are they actually supposed to do? Seeing the insane amount of money flying around at the close of the transfer window has me wondering whether it actually means anything – anyone able to shed some light on this?

  2. My understanding is starting this season a club can face sanctions if it loses more than 100 million over the next three seasons. So most clubs appear to be selling in order to buy and all it’s doing is creating a bit of a merry-go-round….

  3. The principle of FFP is excellent, I just fear that there will be too many loopholes for the rich to exploit. I don’t know enough to comment on what those loopholes might be, i just know that if there are any they will be taken advantage of to the max.
