The monthly kick around

soccer-01

One of the minor ambitions I have for this blog is for it to become a place where people feel comfortable coming, not just to read, but also to engage and debate football issues. Up until now some posts have attracted a handful of comments, which has been nice, but I have been pondering ways to expand on that.

One of the ideas I have come up with is to copy what some political blogs do and try a regular ‘general debate’ thread. The basic thought is that a generic post will go up once a month (for the time being) that encourages comments on any football topic. It may be a bit dire to start with and I’m prepared to cop a few tumbleweeds rolling through the first few, but hopefully after a while it will catch on and become an interesting and vibrant exchange of ideas. Either that or I’ll quietly stop doing it and crawl back under my rock…

Why would you comment here when there are perfectly good forums? I hope because this will be a bit more pleasant. Lots of people have told me that they won’t engage in debate on the forums because they are not moderated and quite often descend into ugly slagging matches. While I don’t want to be a total square, and have no intention of banning anyone (that only puts people off even more), I will simply ask commenters to respect each other and I will delete any personal attacks.

So that’s it. Let’s kick some ideas around. GO!

  1. England’s generally appalling displays at various levels leap to mind, and whether or not they’ll sort it out sooner rather than later (or am I doomed to an increasingly cynical future? Probably). As do the frankly awful kits coming out this season. To name but two off the top of my head.
